How the UUCF/Andrew Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship Foundation Was Formed
On December 28, 1999, UUCF Past President Scott Johnson lost his son Andrew "Andy" Scott Johnson at the age of 19 in a tragic automobile accident. In lieu of flowers, the Johnson family requested UUCF members, friends and family to make donations to the UCA of South Florida Scholarship Fund.
In an overwhelming response from
individuals, more than $30,000 was collected.
Scott Johnson spoke with the UCA of South Florida
board members in regards to the funds collected.
Due to UCA of South Florida having a self supporting
Scholarship Fund, he suggested that a scholarship
fund be set up under the name of the UUCF/Andrew
Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship Foundation. The
money would be placed in a separate account and
would be administered by Scott Johnson, his wife
Robin and Andy's mother Martha Kinsel. The issue
was brought before the UUCF board members on
February 4, 2000. It was Scott Johnson's
goal to have the scholarship fund in place and
funds be distributed to the first recipient at
the 2000 Annual Convention.
When the foundation was created in 2000, it issued its first scholarship which was a $3,000.00 scholarship. Through the success of the Annual Bass Fishing Tournament, the foundation has been able to increase its distribution. As of this year, the foundation has awarded a total of $198,500.00 in scholarships.
