OSHA ISSUES PROPOSED RULE RE CONFINED SPACES

On November 28, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published in the Federal Register a proposed rule (NPRM) that addresses construction-specific issues related to confined space safety. In addition to setting out how to assess the hazards, classify the space, and implement effective procedures to protect employees, the proposed rule requires controlling contractors to coordinate confined space operations among a jobsite's multiple employers. NUCA plans to develop a response to the NPRM before the January 28, 2008 comment period cut-off date. NUCA member comments may be sent directly to George Kennedy, NUCA Vice President of Safety at gkennedy@nycap.rr.com. (Photo courtesy of www.oshaconstruction.com.)
